In the late 1990s Fuad Sawaya was asked to run the PaineWebber Inc. Consumer Products Investment Banking Group. The team completed more than 120 M&A and financing transactions, aggregating more than $14 billion in value. This success attracted the attention of rival firms, and in 1999 Fuad left PaineWebber, Inc. to join JP Morgan to run their Middle Market Consumer Products effort. In 2001, following J.P. Morgan’s merger with Chase, Fuad began to realize his goal of becoming one of the leaders in consumer Mergers, Acquisitions and Financial Advisory Services; he reassembled members of his former PaineWebber team to form the basis of what is today, Sawaya Partners. Today, our team has grown to about 25 people, creating lasting value for our clients’ businesses and brands, and closing nearly a dozen deals in the last year alone.
Yes, we’re in the investment banking business. And while that tells you what we do, it doesn’t speak to the how. After all, it’s the experience our clients have working with us, as much as the results, that make them return again and again.
The results we achieve simply wouldn’t be possible if we weren’t as committed to these relationships… if we weren’t truly invested. “Invested banking” demands that we choose our projects deliberately and treat each and every one with passion, energy and thoughtful attention. Where others might see only numbers, we see relationships and people to whom stellar results make a real human difference.
We are rigorously client-centric, not deal-centric — driven by a deep, empathic understanding of what drives our clients’ business and what drives them as people. We pride ourselves on our EQ as much as our IQ which helps us maintain an holistic view of both buyers and sellers.
“The thing that makes this firm really special is an intangible, but very real and ultimately critical, addition of human energy.”
Our work is as much about the day-to-day journey as the destination. We take advantage of our clients’ and our combined expertise. We work non-hierarchically with a “we’re all in this together” mentality.
“The Sawaya team always looks to develop a truly unbiased strategic partnership with the companies with whom they work and support. Partnership is at the heart of the relationship— a partnership that allows them to advance everyones interests.”
“There is just no other way to say it— these people are the consummate partners.”
There is no off-the-shelf “Sawaya Way”. We are guided always by the style, culture and specific needs and desires of each of our clients. Our solutions are tailored and our materials (in style and content) are highly personalized.
“Sawaya based their recommendations on knowledge and instinct and they were always willing and open to getting a deal done in a unique way rather than following a set-in-stone historical process.”
“You’ll never get a ‘paint-by-the-numbers’ solution with them.”
“Every endeavor, every project, we get the sense that this is truly a cake made from scratch. Just for us.“
“Every interaction with Sawaya Partners, every single point of contact has a tailored, one-of-a-kind feel.”
“These folks are the Tesla of their industry. Deeply knowledgeable, precise but combined with but out-of-the-box, innovative thinking and storytelling.”
To us this is more than a business, it’s our passion. With consistent, high-level involvement, our clients experience our work as going “above and beyond.”
“I honestly felt guilty when I saw how hard they charged on our behalf! They are so committed and dedicated — when I suggested they take a night off they’d say “this is what we love!”
“Sawaya Partners are really attentive to every single detail. This shows in the incredible quality of the materials. It’s why their output is unmatched.”
Our experience in the consumer arena is vast and our category knowledge second to none. We value objectivity and never shoot-from-the-hip. We pride ourselves on our thought leadership and bring it to bear on behalf of each of our clients.
“This team is imbued with an immensely high degree of responsibility. In the investment world that means extra work to become an expert in the sector and the company involved. They put together information always showing that extra spark of creativity— but underneath that is a foundation of serious expertise.”
“Everyone at Sawaya seems to be a perfectionist. This comes from the top down and translates, in their case, to a level of deep sector knowledge that’s hard to find anywhere else. Perfectionism + expertise is really rare combination.”
“The Sawaya team has a detailed understanding of industries and categories they focus on. They understand your specific landscape rather than generic and high level.”
